About
Quintal Florido is a free resource for learning hand embroidery from the very beginning. The name is Portuguese for “flowering backyard”, and the site grew from that idea: small, cheerful things that anyone can grow with a little patience. Every pattern and guide here is written for people who have never threaded an embroidery needle, or who tried once, ended up with a knot on the back, and put the hoop away.
What you will find here
- Original patterns for small hoops: leaves, flowers, geometric designs, mini motifs and seasonal pieces. Each one has a numbered outline, a stitch and color key, and the order to work in.
- Technique guides that explain the fundamentals: the basic stitches, how to transfer a pattern, and how to choose fabric, thread, hoops, stitches and colors.
- Projects that put the stitches to use, such as finishing the back of a hoop, embroidering napkins and stitching on clothing.
If you are new, the best place to begin is How to Start Hand Embroidery, followed by the guide to basic embroidery stitches and the easy leaf sprig pattern. The full list is on the Tutorials page.
How the patterns are made
Every pattern on this site is an original design created for Quintal Florido. We do not copy or redraw other designers’ patterns. The stitches themselves, such as backstitch, satin stitch and the French knot, are traditional techniques that belong to everyone.
Each pattern article names the hoop size, the stitches and the thread colors, and keys every part of the design to a number on the outline. Sizes are given in inches and centimeters. Colors are described by name rather than by a brand’s shade number, so you can use whatever floss you already own.
The images on this site are illustrations drawn to show the design, the stitch placement and the needle positions as clearly as possible. They are diagrams, not photographs of finished pieces, and your stitched version will have the texture and small irregularities of real thread.
We do not publish invented reviews, ratings or testimonials, and the time estimates in the patterns are rough ranges, not promises.
Using the patterns
You are welcome to stitch any pattern here for yourself, as a gift or for a class. The details are in the Terms of Use.
